This is my basic bladesmithing or knife making course and covers the fundamentals of forging, grinding and heat-treating a blade. No experience is needed and the class will guide you through:
- · Using a coke forge and gas forge
- · Forging the blade to shape
- · Thermocycling (reducing grain growth, which is an undesirable effect of over heating steel)
- · Blade shaping, using grinder file and abrasive paper
- · Heat treating
- · Blade finishing, sharpening, and edge testing
You should end up with a finished blade over the three days and more than one if you take to it. The weekend does not cover handling (not enough time over a weekend in my opinion) however I am here to advise and give pointers.
The blades you make will be made from plain carbon steel which is a good forging and forgiving knife steel.
The course will be held Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 4.oopm.
