This Anglo Saxon broken back seax is a collaboration piece between myself and the Czech bladesmith Petr Florianek. I have done a few collaborative pieces with Petr and his imaginative historic carving brings out the best in my blades.
I made the 11.5 inch blade, which is a 4 bar construction. The blade is made from Bloomery iron and steel that I have smelted myself from siderite ore I have gathered in sussex and Swedish magnetite ore. I have smelted these raw materials to make bloomer iron and steel and then combined them with iron at the back of the blade and then a double twisted section of iron and steel and finaly a san mai (3 layer) of iron and steel at the edge. The blade has a subtle patterning and depth.
The carved handle and sheath have been made by Petr. The carved antler handle with its mythical beast at the pommel is fronted with a punched silver ferrule.
The sheath is tooled oak tanned leather and brass fittings.
Materials: Bloomer iron and steel, Antler, Silver, Brass, Enamel, Leather.
The blade is 11.5 inches long, 7.7mm thick at the broken back and 6.9 mm thick at the handle. The blade is just under 1 1/2 inches wide at the broken back.
The knife weighs 435g.
