Ophelias River Kitchen/Camp Knife 630

This is a broad 13” Ophelia’s River pattern kitchen/camp knife.

Constructed with a through tang that is peened over a silver butplate this knife falls somewhere between a kitchen knife and a camp knife , filling the same role as the Gaucho knives carried in the south American pampas . A knife with a little more potential than just kitchen craft for adventurous cooking or just adventure!

This pattern is made by twisting layers of steel , some of which have already been twisted giving the pattern its chaotic swirls and eddies. It reminds me of Ophelia’s river form the painting by John Everett Millais.

During the forging the blade is drawn out into a gradual taper, making a blade that is thin near the tip and retains some of its thickness where it meets the handle, this leads to a much better balanced blade. I have left a little thickness in this blade to add some more weight for chopping.
The handle is made from a lovely piece of burl walnut and there is a sterling silver ferrule and but cap. The tang passes all the way through the handle and is peened over (riveted over).

The knife has a point of balance 3 inches inches into the blade.

Materials : 15 N 20 Carbon Steel and cs80 Carbon Steel en42 carbon steel, walnut and sterling silver.

Blade length 13inches long over all the knife is 17.5 inches long, the blade is just over 2 3/4 inches wide and 3.5 mm thick at the handle.
The knife weighs 395 grams.

Price £800 (plus postage) I can make a sheath for this knife if you like , to be hung in the kitchen of from a belt….please enquire.

I offer a guarantee against faulty manufacture for the lifetime of the knives. This does not cover abusive use of the knives or wear and tear. The handle materials on these knives are natural and as such, must be looked after. These knives will not respond well to being left soaking in a sink or (and it pains me to even think of it) put in a dishwasher. I would consider both of these actions as knife abuse. Use them, clean them, dry them and they will remain beautiful for years to come
