This Anglo Saxon broken back seax is a collaboration piece between myself and the Czech bladesmith Petr Florianek. I love doing collaborative pieces with Petr his imaginative historic carving brings out the best in my blades.
I made the 13 3/4 inch blade, which is a 4 bar construction with wrought iron at the spine 2 bars of 5 layer twisted steel 300 layer random Damascus at the edge.
The carved handle and sheath have been made by Petr. The carved silverberry burl wood handle is fronted by carved antler knot work in a Mercian style (around 800ad) The sheath is patterned oak tanned leather and brass fittings.
Materials: Vintage wrought iron, 15N20 carbon steel and CS80 carbon steel. Box wood, Antler, Brass, Leather.
The blade is just over 13 3/4 inches long, 8mm thick at the broken back and 6 mm thick at the handle. The blade is just over 1 1/2 inches wide at the broken back.
The knife weighs 542g.
